Early in my career, I spent eight years doing ground-breaking research to identify what differentiated the most outstanding leaders, yet personally, I was struggling. Blown away by what I was learning, I was assessing and developing people for senior leadership roles and sought out as a mentor by colleagues. At the same time, within myself, I was increasingly exhausted; my inner world was so different from my professional persona – harsh, self-critical, anxious and afraid.
If you, too, experience a gap between your inner and outer worlds, you’re not alone. At key points in our leadership journey, we meet situations that require more than “strategies” or “skillsets”. In these moments, our mature understanding of what the situation requires bumps up against our inner world, creating a gap between what we aspire to and what we feel able to do in practice. Especially under pressure, the legacies of our prior experiences exert a powerful influence on how we engage with ourselves and others, to the detriment of both ease and performance. Without learning and growth, old habits become more visible and more limiting as time goes on.
Thank goodness, it doesn’t need to be this way! Whilst early research showed me what outstanding leadership looked like, I’ve looked for – and found – ways to develop that work with the grain of who we are. I’ve learned that developing leadership and emotional intelligence is a profoundly human journey and that the gifts of learning, ease and effectiveness are most readily available when we can meet ourselves fully and with warmth. Resonant Healing, underpinned by contemporary neuroscience, delivers warmth in spades, whilst offering effective ways to identify and release old habits that no longer serve us.
This work has been transformative for me, putting my harsh inner voice at ease and enabling me to step more fully into my strengths. More than ever, I can meet life’s inevitable challenges with flexibility, ease and grace, discerning what’s mine to address and what to leave with others. Over time, for me and my clients, this work brings a move away from reactivity towards skilled and considered responses to each new situation, creating an environment in which everyone can give of their best.
Leadership takes many forms, from leading our own lives and the leadership we provide in our families as we mature to leadership in organisations.
