Sue Johnson, PhD.

Keynote Presentation
Breaking the Code of Love – Relationships Can Now Be More Than Magic or Chance.
We are wired for connection. The new science of adult attachment has cracked the code of romantic love and shows us the way to the secure lasting bonds we all need so much. More than this, it tells us how we can shape relationships that grow our sense of confidence and competence and helps us deal with our vulnerable moments with balance and strength. Belonging and becoming are intertwined.
Sue will talk about how attachment science has changed intervention in couple relationships and relationship education. She will also talk about the enormous healing power of safe intimate connection with others.

How Does Connection Heal Us?
Do you ever wonder what you would be like if you had been completely supported? What is support? What brings us toward our true selves? It seems to be a sense of being understood. This might be through eye contact, touch, facial expression. Sometimes it slips through art, music, literature, dance or movies. Sometimes it comes from companion animals, nature or a sense of the divine. And least often, it comes through the words that other people say — resonance. Join Sarah for an exploration of resonance, the art of noticing and nurturing connection with our words and with our presence.
Jade S. Sasser, PhD, MA, MPH
Associate Professor in the Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies at UC Riverside. Her work explores how environmental problems such as climate change and toxic exposures intersect with race and gender—specifically, women of color’s bodies, health, rights, and reproductive justice. Author of, On Infertile Ground: Population Control and Women’s Rights in the Era of Climate Change, published in 2018 by NYU Press.
Keynote Presentation
Advancing an Intersectional Climate Justice
Climate change is a crisis that unfolds differently for communities along the lines of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and other aspects of identity. How can we create the climate futures we want by placing marginalized communities at the center? What role does justice play in that process? I explore diverse youth climate activism, the Sunrise movement, Movement Generation, climate strikers and others, paying particular attention to anti-racist, anti-capitalist, justice-centered approaches. I also think through how emotional and mental health support can effectively be centered in an intersectional climate justice approach. In the end, I argue for creatively drawing on science, art, and racial justice movements as blueprints for imagining and creating hopeful, just climate futures.
Dan Siegel, M.D.
Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, Author, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry UCLA

MWe and the Integration of Identity
Who you are is both an internal (Me) and an interconnected (We) self that shapes your identity and sense of belonging. But how can you be both within the body and between the body and in relationship to people and the planet? In this talk we will explore how you can combine an inner “Me” and an inter “We” to become a whole integrated self – a MWe! In many ways, we are more like interconnected verb-like events rather than only noun-like separate entities. The symbolic term MWe integrates the inner aspect of who we are with the interconnected facet of our lives: Me plus We equals MWe. Integration is composed of differentiated aspects being linked without losing the uniqueness of the differentiated components. Me does not get lost in MWe, it is woven with the equally important differentiated sense of We. With this more integrated sense of our identity, MWe can move forward to cultivate personal, interpersonal, and even planetary health and flourishing.

Is Depression a Conserved Mechanism to Terminate Protracted Separation Distress?
In the conventional view, depression is just an illness caused by a chemical imbalance, commonly treated with SSRIs or SNRIs that are both safe and effective. All four of these popular notions may be more wrong than right, and they all contribute to a basic obfuscation of depression’s core biological mechanisms widespread in our medical industrial complex. These popular misconceptions also hide a fundamental failure of truly effective treatment: depression is now the single most expensive condition in Western societies, both in dollars and in human suffering.
What does a more ‘social brain-centric’ view of depression do to our treatment algorithms and emphases? It fundamentally if not profoundly changes them, but change is long overdue. A more social brain-centric view of depression has many implications for new approaches to treatment and care, particularly psychotherapy, lifestyle change, reduction of isolation.
