Often we shy away from saying affirmations because they strike us as inauthentic, as if we are affirming things that aren’t true… is that your experience too?

Affirmations for Turbulent Times is my answer to this dilemma. The answer is to first give ourselves self-resonance for the places where it feels hard to use affirmations.

Research has shown that affirmations genuinely change the brain. They help us move out of immobilization into action, decrease stress, increase well-being, and improve academic performance, but first we must learn how to use them with genuine authenticity!

Everyone has emotions that seem too big for them, or times when it seems like too many emotions are happening at once. Humans need to have belonging in each of their worlds, and part of the way we belong is to feel the same way, and in the same amounts, as others in our groups.

This book offers you your own community of feeling, a safe space to notice and name your own real experience of these turbulent times. If possible, give yourself permission to name what is true for you as you read, and to feel what you really feel.

I used to struggle to use affirmations even though I knew they’d be proven to shift brains in all the good ways! If you feel shy or hesitant about starting to write your own resonant affirmations, please allow me to accompany you by sharing how it was for me to embark on writing this book. I have loved writing this book so much… but the writing of it took me into intense vulnerability.

This book is a direct offering of resonance, unshielded by neuroscience, without the clothing of process work. You may feel vulnerable or exposed, so I share with you some glimpses of how I spoke to myself as I started to write, in the hope that it will support you:

“Just begin. And if shame arises, be kind to it and to yourself in feeling it. Acknowledge your vulnerability and keep on going. Consult your body when it feels right, if it feels right. Your body can help guide you through the issues you want to resolve and can let you know about your deepest hopes and values. If your body doesn’t speak to you, just follow your thoughts.”
